October 01, 2015Reviewer: Kim in Louisiana* First, let me say this: I love sucralose. It's my favorite artificial sweetener. Stevia tastes bitter to me; sugar alcohols taste great but I'm not sure how they affect my metabolism. Sucralose is the best.
Splenda, however, is not the best. I used it for YEARS. I, too, loved it. But it's not what it seems. Look at the ingredients: dextrose (sugar), maltodextrin (sugar), sucralose. Because sucralose is so sweet, 1 teaspoon's worth of sweetness is almost invisible in powder form. So they add powdered sugar as a "filler." But it has 0 calories, you say? So did I. But the law says that if a serving has less than 1 gram of sugar, they can legally say it has 0 grams. It does not. Every packet contains 3 calories' worth of sugar--that's 0.8 g. per packet. Google it, since I can't provide a link.
If you, like I used to, use a lot of Splenda (in any form), you are getting a whole lot of extra sugar in a super-absorbable form. Wonder why your diet isn't going as well as you want? Wonder no more. If you account for the extra sugar and don't mind it, you're in luck!
If you DON'T want sugar in your "sugar-free" sweetener, order LIQUID sucralose, which requires no fillers other than water. EZ-Sweetz is sold here, and it's great. It even comes in tiny bottles you can carry everywhere. Fiberfit is also good for when you need the equivalent of cups of sugar; it is isomalt and sucralose.
Note that the Splenda people have studiously refused to sell a liquid version, even though they sell it to food manufacturers. Why? You tell me. Why would a maker of diet foods sell a product that is guaranteed to sabotage diets? Hmmm.
